Senior School News

I have been really impressed with the way Senior School students have started their year of learning. The environment in each classroom has been positive and students have attended to their studies in a responsible and organised manner.

Last Thursday at Deakin University, our Year 11 and Year 12 students participated extremely well in the annual Kick Start Day. It was great to see our college leaders be so involved in the activities of the day which included a Trademark session. We are looking forward to the presentation of the final set of Trademark statements, which will set the standard for not only student’s approaches to their learning but how they will carry themselves in both Newcomb Secondary College and the broader community.

Bus Travel

Travel arrangements of students to and from school is a major aspect of every student’s school life. As a college, we are conscious of this and as such are always looking to lobby to improve the bus service schedules for our students. We are currently working closely with Geelong region of Public Transport Victoria to review the college Public Bus services. Hopefully I will have more information to provide in the coming weeks.

Students are reminded, that Newcomb Secondary College has high expectations on them whilst they travel to and from school within the community. Behaviour at bus stops, and on the transport services must reflect that of positive behaviour and respect expectations and standards equal to those of what we expect within the college grounds.

Upcoming Calendar Events

Kick Start Day

“Exhausting!” was the quote one student gave at the end of Kick Start Day last Thursday. The day was start to finish full of presenters, information and activities. A brief sample of life at Deakin as a university student, a pathways talk from Mr Horsted, and resilience and wellbeing from Chiara and Mr Sinclair were some of the activities which students participated in.

The afternoon saw separate seminars for each of VCAL, Year 11 VCE and Year 12 VCE students, depending on the year each group has ahead of them. The main event to many students was the collaborative creation of a shortlist of terms that the Senior School could use as a trademark.

Currently this list contains 12 words; Resilience, Motivated, Belief, Pride, Self-Motivated, Disciplined, Respectful, Reliable, Hard Working, Role Models, Enthusiastic, and Consistent. This will be further narrowed down by students in the coming weeks until 5 terms are selected to represent the Senior School. Watch this space!

Sharing a space, it’s all about mutual respect.

The Language Centre is the new home of the Senior School in 2019. Its freshly painted interior has a layout that presented some unique challenges and opportunities for the students and teachers who now inhabit it throughout the school day.

The centre’s open plan design and singular kitchenette have meant that parts of the space are shared by teachers and students, particularly at the lunch and recess breaks. Discussions between staff and student leaders, as representatives of their peers, have so far lead to a successful sharing of this space.

‘Mutual respect’ seem to be the watch words as staff and students allow each other space when it is apparent that is required, such as for study or lesson preparation. At the same time it has allowed for more frequent and transparent discussions between staff and student on matters relating to school, such as attendance, uniform or classes.

But it’s not all business, and some lunchtimes have seen staff and students engaged in courteous conversations about favourite television shows or sport as they shared a table to eat their lunch. A far cry from the dusty old E-Block, sharing the Language Centre space has the potential to be one of the great experiences for Year 12 students in 2019 and beyond.

P-TECH Is Back And Ready To Go In 2019

Firstly - Congratulations to all the students who completed their two year Certificates at the end of last year.  As our P-TECH student Jack Terrill said at a meeting last year "this is a great qualification to have in my back pocket" as I move forward with my future career.

In 2019 P-TECH will have a brand new stream of study with a Certificate II in Automotive (Motor Mechanics) being offered.  Two lucky Year 10 students will commence their work placements at Blood Toyota.  Other Year 10 students will be in Laboratory Skills, IT and Business placements with our P-TECH partners.

This week Denver T commenced his work placement with his mentors Nathan and Steve at the Royal Geelong Yacht Club (RGYC).

As part of  his induction he did a tour of the facilities, heard all about the multi million dollar building project about to commence and was presented with his RGYC T-Shirt, ID card and lanyard ready to start. He will study a Certificate III in Business over the next two years at the Gordon.

Thank you to Phil C, Nathan B and Steve H from the RGYC for your continued support of the P-TECH Program.

Food Technology News

Food Technology for 2019 has started off with theory for all year levels due to the continued construction of the C Block. Returning after our summer break, we have seen a lot of progress with windows and new door ways in and now plaster is looking complete.

Air conditioners are also in the rooms, with great big sky lights letting lots of natural light through.

Mr Hopgood says we are on track for mid March, so there's much excitement from the Food technology team!

Start of the 2019 College Year

Last Wednesday we welcomed back our students to the 2019 school year. It was great to see everyone and there was a general excitement as staff and students commenced their year.

We started with a whole school assembly with some general welcomes and reminders on expectations for how we work together.

We welcomed new students, of course at Year 7, but also at other year levels and we welcomed new staff: Assistant Principal, Mr Scott McLeod and in the office, Ms Lisa Marin. Keep an eye out for some short introductions in the coming weeks.

We then moved to year level assemblies, where the organisational practicalities of being ‘Ready to Learn’ were supported, before getting straight into our classes for lesson 2.

Lockers and Combination Locks

All students have been allocated with a student planner and a locker. All students must have a lock on their locker – the school cannot take responsibility for the contents of student’s lockers. Year 7 students have been supplied with a MASTER combination lock which will be charged to the family account.

If students at other levels wish to buy a combination lock they can be purchased directly from the General Office for $10.00.

Year 7 Update

The next generation of students at Newcomb Secondary College have certainly hit the ground running! Consistent feedback from all members of the College has highlighted how polite and courteous these new students are, and all should be commended for the positive way in which they have made one of the biggest transitions in their life!

The jump from primary to secondary school represents a key turning point in a young person’s life, and this can be stressful for many. I would remind our students that they have a range of people who will help at any given opportunity if they are experiencing any difficulties or challenges. Ensuring our students have a successful and enjoyable start to Year 7 is the priority of the Student Support Team.

We have some very exciting dates coming up, including the Year 7 Beach Days on Thursday the 28th of February (71&72) and Thursday the 7th of March (73&74), as well as our Year 7 Orientation Camp later this term (more information will be distributed over coming weeks). It will also be great to see our Year 7s getting involved with the College Athletic Sports (12/2) and the Swimming Carnival (18/2).

Well done once again to our Year 7 students for their encouraging and enthusiastic start to 2019!

Mr James Murphy, Assistant Principal

Senior School News

It’s hard to believe that not only is it 2019, but we’ve already had a week of school! In the Senior School students and staff have all hit the ground running. Following our successful orientation programs at the tail end of 2018 our students knew what to expect and had commenced learning immediately on the first days of school. But the in class learning isn’t all that’s going on for the Senior School at Newcomb Secondary College, we have a couple of exciting events coming up to help our students prepare for the year ahead.

This year we have included the Year 10 cohort to the Senior School. What this means for our Year 10 students and equally those in Years 11 & 12 is that they are now considered role models of the college. We expect Senior School students to be leaders within the college for their fellow peers and display positive interactions with staff, fellow students, have respect for the school, their learning and themselves, present well and carry themselves in a positive and responsible manner at all times.

Kick Start Day 2019

This is a great opportunity for students to collaborate in teams, strengthen relationships with their peers and staff, undertake presentations on study skills, resilience, career pathways and trademark as well as set goals for 2019.

First up we have our Kick Start Day on 7/2/19. Traditionally we have held separate days for Years 11 and 12, but with the delineation between year levels becoming ever more blurred it was time to combine these days into one. On this day all Year 11 and 12 students will be bussed out to Deakin, Waurn Ponds, to participate in a number of school and Deakin lead workshops. They’ll learn about some of the formalities of the VCE/VCAL system they are enrolled in, have some pathways discussions, create a trademark for the Senior School and learn some valuable skills to help deal with the challenges of their final years at NSC. This is a great opportunity for students to collaborate in teams, strengthen relationships with their peers and staff, undertake valuable presentations as well as set goals for 2019.

Elevate Study Skills Session

A month after our Kick Start Day we have our first Study Skills session to help our students learn or polish the skills they need to be ready for their major assessments. This will be for Years 10, 11 and 12 and whilst many participated in some sessions last year, the content of this seminar will be entirely new.

Following the successes of 2018, with NSC being identified as one of the top 25 most improved schools in Victoria, we have high hopes for 2019. A new venue, some exciting opportunities and a great year lie ahead.

Language Centre

We are pleased to be able to provide Senior Students with the Language Center as a space solely for students in Year 12 to relax with their peers during down time, study privately or collaboratively and chat to key Senior School staff leaders. As a school, we pride ourselves with being able to provide students with high quality facilities for learning and trust that students in Year 12 will respect the space provided to them, act responsibly and maturely as young adults in it throughout the year.

Athletics Day 2019

Athletics Day is nearly upon us, being held on Tuesday the 12th of February (week 3). Remember, you are making a positive contribution to your house just by participating! So don’t hesitate to get involved in what is a fantastic day!

Furthermore, remember to bring along a water bottle, hat and to regularly apply sunscreen throughout the day.

House Captains

Congratulations to the following Year 11 students who have been elected as House Captains for 2019…

Curlewis: Jack Speed & Hamish Sentance

Drysdale: Kaysha Pitman & Julia Scaffidi

Harrison: Lachlan Illes Gerdes & Erin Glover

Mr Jeremy Sinclair

Leading Teacher- Head of Senior School

Newcomb Secondary Welcomes New Assistant Principal Mr Scott McLeod

Firstly, I would like say that I am very excited to be joining Newcomb Secondary College and look forward to working closely with the fantastic staff, students and wider community in providing an outstanding education for our students. I have been truly blown away with the warm welcome I have received by all members of the college community and am in admiration of the positive culture that exists within the school.

In my role as an Assistant Principal, I will be working with the Senior School team (Years 10-12)  to ensure that we deliver programs that meet student’s pathways, deliver best practice teaching and learning in the classroom that caters for all students, and provide appropriate and suitable student support and management systems. In what is a very important stage of a student’s life, we will ensure that all students are provided with the necessary tools and skills that enable them to not only be best informed and prepared for their chosen pathway, but equally are in a position to thrive in the jobs of the 21st century.

Mr Scott McLeod, Assistant Principal

Wills: Bianca Merlino & Tim Payne

Upcoming Calendar Events

• Thursday Feb 7- Kick Start Day (Year 11 & 12) at Deakin University

• Tuesday Feb 12- NSC Athletics Carnival (whole school) at Landy Field

• Monday Feb 18- NSC Swimming Carnival (whole school) at Kardinia Pool

Further information on these events is contained in this newsletter.

New Arrival

Newcomb Secondary College congratulate Mr George and his partner on the arrival of a beautiful baby boy.

Baby Rory was born on 19/01/19 weighing 1.090 kilos. Mum and baby both doing well.

Teenagers and Sleep

• Sleep research suggests that a teenager needs between 8 and 10 hours of sleep every night.

• Most teenagers only get about 6.5-7.5 hours sleep per night.

• Teen's body clocks naturally shift to make them feel tired later in the evening, but early school starts do not enable them to sleep in the mornings.

• Chronic sleep deprivation can have dramatic effects on a teenager’s life, including affecting their mental wellbeing and reducing their academic performance at school.

• Smart phones and other devices used around bed time reduce sleep time.

• Avoiding stimulants such as coffee, tea, soft drinks and energy drinks in the evening can help to promote better sleep.

2018 Bike Tour Report

Tour de Gippsland – 2018 – It’s a Wrap!

What a week we experienced for our Tour de Gippsland 2018!

We had 44 students and 10 staff tackle the tour this year. It is really significant to note this included 28 first time students and 3 first time staff!  Also, of these students, 33 were from year 7, 8 and 9!  Amazing.

The Tour dished up some incredible conditions; searing heat on the first 2 days saw us make the decision to bus the students for the second half of day 2.  It also brought out the very best of country hospitality when our whole group was invited to cool down in a farmers pool!  Something we all appreciated and won’t forget.

There were so many highlights it is hard to recall them all, but some included, our rest day at Wilsons Promontory, the views from Mt Oberon, Squeaky beach, the “fines” ceremonies, the security guards visiting us at the Yallourn Open cut mine, incredible scenery and views along the coast lines of Western Port Bay, 2 ferry trips, relaxing on the foreshore at Sorrento and of course riding back into school being met by friends and family!

I am so proud of the way the students conducted themselves over the course of the tour.  They were helpful when asked, they showed initiative where they could, and took all of our instructions and guidance seriously.  They were often exhausted, and sore, and hungry, and wanting to be home, but still responded and trusted staff when encouraged to ride another section and keep pushing!

So, on behalf of this years bike tour staff, thank you and well done students, thank you parents and families

(and thank you to Team Taylor) for supporting the tour and making it so successful.

Orientation Day Year 7 Class of 2019

Tuesday this week we welcomed our Year 7 class of 2019, 97 students joined us for a day of orientation. The day had been planned to give students a range of experiences, as well as meet their class mates and teachers.

The bike tour got away early last Thursday and faced a couple of gruelling days riding uphill with high temperatures and wind. A friendly dairy farmer provided assistance in the form of a swimming pool – how fantastic! One of the many great stories that will come out of the 2018 bike tour.

Final Weeks for Students

The end of year ‘Activity Weeks’ have got off to a great start with supervised activities like board games, basketball, other hall games, and Sing Star  which was a hit.

Orientation Week

2019 Orientation for Years 7 to 10 went extremely well last week with all teachers and students following the 2019 timetable.

Orientation Day Year 7 Class of 2019

Tuesday this week we welcomed our Year 7 class of 2019, 97 students joined us for a day of orientation. The day had been planned to give students a range of experiences, as well as meet their class mates and teachers.

Booklists

Parents are reminded that book lists are due back to school on Friday this week, but orders can be submitted online at www.campion.com.au (by creating an account and using the Newcomb Secondary College booklist code “WW5C”)

Bike Tour

The bike tour got away early last Thursday and faced a couple of gruelling days riding uphill with high temperatures and wind. A friendly dairy farmer provided assistance in the form of a swimming pool – how fantastic! One of the many great stories that will come out of the 2018 bike tour.

Final Weeks for Students

The end of year ‘Activity Weeks’ have got off to a great start with supervised activities like board games, basketball, other hall games, and Sing Star  which was a hit.

‘Unapologetically Myself’

On Wednesday afternoon students will attend a performance called ‘Unapologetically Myself’ by the Nobody’s Fool Theatre group at the Courthouse Youth Arts. This is a free excursion for the first 50 students to return permission forms. NSC students involved in the Nobody’s Fool Program are in the performance. We are very proud of this program which is a successful collaboration between Somebody’s Daughter Theatre, Newcomb Secondary College and BCYF. There are several performance sessions for schools as well as a public performance on Tuesday 11 December @ 7.30pm. White Ribbon Day

White Ribbon Day 2018

Last week our students participated in some activities to raise awareness for White Ribbon Day, which was on Friday the 23rd of November. White Ribbon is an organisation which raises awareness of the impacts of gender based violence, which is important for us to stand up against.

Students got involved very enthusiastically and we are proud of them for taking it on board to educate each other about this issue. The activities we had last week included painting our nails white, wearing commemorative ribbons, music and white decorations, a lolly jar guessing competition, a
t-shirt logo competition and a black light dance party.

Thank you so much to those staff and students who assisted in organising and running the day, especially those who sacrificed their lunch breaks to help out. Thank you also to all of those students who attended, your support makes a huge difference.

If you or someone you know is affected by family violence, there is help available.

Staff Professional Learning Day

Last Thursday all staff undertook professional learning related to student voice and agency. Student agency refers to learning through activities that are meaningful and relevant to learners, driven by their interests, and often self-initiated with appropriate guidance from teachers. To put it simply, student agency gives students voice and often, choice, in how they learn. With reference to current education research, staff considered many ways to further develop authentic student voice and agency in their learning.

End Of Year Program

In Weeks 10 and 11, the final two weeks of the 2018 school year, there will be a program of activities including the Adventure Park Day on Friday 14th December.

The week is an opportunity for all students to make a positive and proactive start with the commencement of their next year of secondary school education, and full attendance across the week is expected.

Being Late Is Not Great

Lateness

The teaching staff has raised some concern that many students are arriving late for school on a fairly regular basis. Unfortunately this is a situation that can have a negative effect on the education of not only those students who are late, but also the other students in the class.

What impact does being late have on the student?

Students who are late miss a lot of instructions and information about what is happening, not to mention important learning sessions. This means that they have to catch up somehow. Students also miss out on catching up with their friends in the playground before school. Students can feel unsettled, disorganized and unhappy for the rest of the day and it can take them some time to complete and understand the work that they have missed. It’s similar to being late to see a movie and not being able to understand what’s happening because you have missed out on who the characters are and what the plot is.

How does it affect the other students in the class?

Students who are late have an unsettling effect on the rest of the class. Because not all late students arrive at once, the interruptions go on until the last student is settled. Students who are late often have things that need to be done prior to them joining the class and this causes even more disruption. Sometimes other students have to wait to get the teachers attention and important issues can be forgotten.

Why does student lateness cause difficulties for the teacher?

The teacher has a certain amount of material and activities to cover each lesson. Also, organizational issues are usually dealt with at the beginning of the day. Teachers can become increasingly frustrated when late students continually and repeatedly interrupt their planned routines, as they have to stop teaching to deal with the issues involved.

We are all human. Cars can beak down and unexpected situations can occur. We know that family morning routines are not always straightforward. If you are experiencing problems, speak to us, as we may be able to offer suggestions to help.

We are happy to accept that students will be late on the odd occasion because of unforeseen circumstances. However, arriving late on a regular basis is not acceptable

Remember

A student who is half an hour late each day misses the equivalent of 16.6 days of learning each year.

Tour De Gippsland 2018

Tour de Gippsland - 2018

We are all set for Bike Tour 2018 – Tour de Gippsland! After an Epic “false start” last year forced us to cancel this tour – we are ready to go.  We have 45 students and 10 staff taking on the 450km tour of beautiful Gippsland, featuring a rest day at Tidal River, Wilsons Promontory.

This year has seen a new format of training rides being conducted on almost a weekly basis on a week night after school hours and aside from the logistics of starting and finishing on time (sorry parents!), this has worked extremely well in helping all staff and students get themselves into the swing of things – riding safely and building fitness.  We are particularly pleased with the large cohort of junior students (We have 9 year 7’s!) taking on the tour this year – and the attitude and diligence they have shown to training so far – well done!

We are also very grateful and humbled to have received a very large sponsorship/donation from the Team Taylor Foundation.  This donation has greatly reduced the cost of the tour for our students.

This will be a week to remember and we are looking forward to sharing our adventure with you on our ‘socials’ along the way and on our return.

Primary School Visits

Congratulations to all of our music students involved in the Intermediate and Junior Concert Bands who participated in the day out performing at Moolap, Tate Street and Leopold Primary Schools.   This was an extremely busy day with three set ups and packs, along with a half hour lunch break at McDonald’s.  All of our performances were extremely well received and enjoyed by our younger audiences.  I would also like to thank the Principals of our feeder primary schools for making us extremely welcome on this day and we look forward to visiting again in the near future.

Annual Music Concert

Congratulations to all students who participated in our Annual Music Concert last Thursday night.  We are extremely proud of you, your achievements in music and commitment to the program. The concert was a great evening of sharing all of our work in all the bands for the year with other members of the College community, students’ families and friends.  Sincere thanks to everyone who supported us by attending the concert, donating to our Christmas hamper fundraising raffle and entry donation. It was great to see the raffle prizes being won by people in the audience.

Year 7 Transition

The Newcomb Wellbeing and Engagement Team along with the support from the SSSO Network has begun their transition program for 2018.

The idea of the program is to offer an opportunity to those Grade 6 students who may feel they would like extra transition, to have a chance to meet students and staff prior to orientation day. The program runs on Tuesday afternoons for 4 weeks. Students particpate in many activities that will assist them to get to know staff, students and feel more comfortable in their new secondary school environment.

Our Student Support, Leadership and Wellbeing Teams always love this time of the year as its always exciting to meet the new faces of our prospective students.

Last week students competed in an Amazing Race around the college aimed to help them identify and become familiar with the key positions that they will access in the school next year. This week Ms Hunt is taking the students on a English Extravaganza with team games!

Ms Ercoli

Year 10 Work Experience

Last week, the 12th-16th November, 34 of our Year 10 cohort put to the test their ‘Core Skills for Work’ on Work Experience. Their work places ranged from trades in carpentry and building to teaching and assisting at local primary schools. As always, working with animals was a big hit!

The week provided a wonderful opportunity for students to see what careers of interest looked like in practice and allowed the opportunity to experience what a world of work may look moving forward. Congratulations to all students who completed placements, all employers who gave our students such a great opportunity and to staff who visited our students on site.

Mr George

Year 11 Exams

For their penultimate week of 2018 and the final involvement in their Year 11 experience, our VCE students are undertaking exams to test themselves on their Semester 2 subjects.

The turnout has been good with almost perfect attendance across all VCE Exams. Equally impressively students are tackling the exams with the same vigour and earnestness that will be required in their 2019 Year 12 Exams.

It would appear that whilst the exam experience is generally considered a trying one, many of the students relish the opportunity to demonstrate their learning and no doubt eagerly await the feedback on these exams that their teachers will be giving them during Orientation Week (Friday 23/11 – Thursday 29/11).

Mr Sinclair

C Block Renovations

The old C Block Building has received some funding to upgrade our facilities and buildings. Plans have been completed and the tender for the building works have been awarded to Rendine. Rendine is a locally based building company being established in Geelong for over 40 years.

The scope of works will include upgrading of our food technology room and now allowing the canteen to be located inside the building. There will also an upgrade of three general purpose class rooms, and we will be installing skylights and glass walls to make the area much lighter and provide a clean, bright environment for our students.

Works are to be completed approximately mid-March. The works are away from any student or staff activity and should not pose any intrusion to our day to day business.

Remembrance Day 2018

As we are all aware, Sunday the 11th of November was Remembrance Day, and not just any Remembrance Day, but the 100 year anniversary of Armistice. The day when the guns fell silent and the First World War ended. With this in mind, Newcomb Secondary College held an assembly on Friday the 9th of November to conduct our own ceremony for all students and staff.

This assembly gave our new school captains their first chance to demonstrate their public speaking, something which they did admirably. As students entered the hall they were greeted with a scrolling poppy coloured silhouette of diggers on the fields of the First World War projected onto the back wall of the stage, marching eternally. After a brief word of welcome from acting assistant principal Mr James Murphy our school captain, Crystal Muir, took the microphone.

Crystal spoke eloquently and introduced herself and the other 2019 captains. She then continued with an exposition on the importance of the day and the significance of the sacrifice made by those who died serving their nation. She mentioned one individual, James Martin, as an example of how even those as young or younger than the students in the audience could be caught up in the war and perish whilst serving their country. She finished with a call to solidarity in our respect for those who served.

Jory took to the stage following Crystal, he read the famous poem “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae. This reading was enhanced by the deep and respectful tone of Jory’s voice and the backdrop of poppies in a French field. After his reading Jory ceded the microphone to Liam to read The Ode and conduct the minutes silence.

Liam undertook this great duty with much solemnity, as befitted the occasion. He reminded all present of their role in the oath, namely, repeating “We will remember them” and “Lest we forget” at the appropriate times and of the sanctity of the minutes silence. To the credit of all involved, these requests were adhered to and the only sound to break the minute’s silence was the Rouse, played by Brianna Howell and Ian Crowther at the conclusion of that interval.

With their respects paid and the formal proceedings concluded, the students filed respectfully out of the hall.

College Council

The November meeting of the Newcomb Secondary College Council will take place on Thursday evening in the Language Centre.

P-TECH Bulletin

It was Ice-Breaker day in P-TECH land last week!

The annual P-TECH Ice-breaker day was held last week and involved our third group of students to participate in the Program.  Joining the students on the day were the mentors from three of our brand new industry partners - Challenge Meats, Blood Toyota and the SC Technology Group.

The students were lead by Tom from High Resolves and participated in sessions on personal impact and effective collaboration. They were involved in discussions around being a good global citizen and played several games which encouraged good listening and telling skills.  They also learnt the benefit of seeking out a number of different ideas and perspectives before rushing in and making quick decisions.

The Chair Game!

One of the highlights of the day was "the chair game" where each team was shown a picture of part of a diagram on how to set out a pattern with a group of chairs. The whole group had to then join forces and make the final pattern without writing, drawing or talking to one another.  After a number of funny hand actions etc the group were successful in completing the task.  A great exercise in working and co-operating together in a team environment.

Thanks again to Tom from High Resolves and our industry partner IBM for providing this session.

Only three Newcomb Library lunch excursions are remaining for this term.

Term 4 weather is perfect for a lunchtime walk! Excursion forms are available at the LRC circulation desk if you would like to join us.  The form allows permission for all three dates.

Feedback Week

This week teachers will be adding to their feedback in the Xuno Markbook, providing a commentary on how students are progressing with their learning progress and individual goals. Students are encouraged to view this feedback, to discuss it with their teachers and most importantly, to let this inform the development of personal learning objectives moving forward. If any students or parents and guardians are experiencing difficulties in accessing the feedback on Xuno, please feel free to contact the College for assistance.

VCE Exams Update

One week down, three to go, and what a week it’s been. With some of our biggest exams out of the way, English and Further Maths, along with Biology, Business Management and Psychology, some of our students have had a busy week. Emma Densley was the first to conclude her exam period, although others won’t be far behind as the Food Studies, Health and Human Development and PE exams occur throughout the rest of this week.

So far the attendance and attitude towards the exams, have both been excellent. Most students have left their exams feeling like they have demonstrated the knowledge and skills they have worked so hard to develop throughout the year. Keep it up Year 12s!

School Captains 2019

Our process for selecting the school captains has concluded for another year.

The School Captains for 2019 will be:

Jack Terrill and Crystal Muir

The Vice Captains for 2019 will be:

Liam Sentence and Jory Howell

These individuals went through an extensive process including ballots by students and staff as well as an interview with a panel comprising of Wellbeing member Chiara Ercoli, 2018 Captain Emily Taylor and Mr Sinclair. All candidates selected demonstrated that they had support of staff and students and were able to participate in the interview as they would a job interview.

The interview involved answering questions about what they would bring to the role, how they would manage their success and how they would manage interpersonal differences in the course of their leadership. The candidates also delivered a speech to their cohort and some staff and this earned them respect from those who were lucky enough to hear them.

We’d like to thank all the applicants, and panel members for their involvement and congratulate our school captains for 2019.

The new school captains will begin their first official duty on Friday, as they lead the Remembrance Day assembly.

Under the microscope at Analytical MicroLabs….

Zoe and Jase recently did a so called differential stain - called a Gram stain. They used 3 different, non-pathogenic organisms and assessed their stained slides using a light microscope.

This practical  work helped them to understand the principle of differential staining in microbiology, the use of a light microscope and how to evaluate different bacteria (shape and colour) based on the  staining method.

This “hand-on”opportunity for Jace and Zoe who are both studying a Certificate III in Laboratory Skills at the Gordon is all part of their

Grade 6 Transition

Grade 6 Transitions

Over recent weeks, our Year 7 students have been supporting local Grade 6 students with their preparations for the transition into secondary school. The students have been asked about a range of issues, varying from what it is like having so many new teachers and being in a much larger school, to how do you deal with the process of starting over and meeting so many new people.

Our Year 7 students have been great ambassadors for Newcomb Secondary College during these visits, and should feel very proud of how confidently and articulately they have been presenting!

Final classes, celebrations, and practice exams

It has been a hectic week for Year 12s. With a final day of classes on Monday 22/10, Celebration Day on 23/10 and two intense days of practice exams on 25/10 and 26/10.

The last day of classes brought mixed emotions to the surface for many as they both exalted and mourned the end of a structure which has defined their days for 13 years. Although for many this end is only transitory as they move into exam revision or further study next year. For others it may be the end of time spent in classrooms for periods defined by the ringing of a bell.

For the Year 12 VCAL students in particular, it was a chance to end their schooling with some useful tips on CPR and safe partying from Amanda our school nurse.

Celebration Day was a day of excitement for the school finishers, bewilderment for many younger students and terror for the staff as the school was transformed into a Halloween themed prankdom. The usual zip-tied lockers, water pistols, and posters were joined this year by an abundance of chalked messages proclaiming such things as acclaim for Chris Lily’s work (Jonah from Tonga’s tag), the presence of the author at the location (Name was here) and advice to participate in all school activities (“Go to Connect!”). A variety of Halloween themed directions such as severed limbs, skulls, cobwebs and fake blood also added to the school’s aesthetic.

Following a hasty clean-up, the Year 12s along with several staff members headed down to Torquay Surf Life Saving Club for a bbq lunch and farewell from Mr Honeywell and Mr Sinclair.

After a day of rest for Geelong Cup, our Year 12s were back at it! Practice exams ran back to back throughout the Thursday and Friday of the week and were well attended by all students who will soon be undertaking their final VCE exams. It bodes well that the practice exams were not only well attended, but undertaken with all the sincerity and dedication as real exams. All exams ran full duration of the VCAA exams and mimicked them exactly in content and structure.

As a result of the hard work of our Year 12s, there were some busy teachers over the weekend correcting hundreds of pages of work in order to give the best possible feedback and advice to their Year 12s. Feedback which will be invaluable in their final days before their exams.

Anti Ice Seminar

Ice, Ice, baby...“Actually, no thanks.” Is what our Year 11s would say in response to this classic hit from Vanilla Ice. Well, they’d probably sing along and save the polite rejection for someone who is actually offering them Methamphetamines, especially after the Australian Anti Ice Campaign (AAIC) seminar on Monday 22/10.

This seminar saw two representatives of the AAIC, recovered and reformed ice users, speak to our Year 11s about the dangers of the drug. Weaving their stories in with facts and medical advice created a compelling lesson for our students. The danger this drug causes to the individual and the community as a whole is enormous and education is one of the best ways to protect our young people from these dangers.

Bannockburn P-12 College Performance

Last Monday afternoon the Senior Concert band performed at the new Bannockburn P to12 Campus over lunchtime. Our performance was aimed at giving their students some foresight into what a secondary college music program has to offer and what we do here at Newcomb Secondary College.

In 2019 Bannockburn P-12 will start a music program and commence to introduce instrumental music into their college.

This was an extremely rewarding experience for our Senior Concert Band Members. The Bannockburn students were excellent, making us feel most welcome in their school and they thoroughly enjoyed our performance.

Annual Family Concert

Tuesday November 20th – Annual Music Concert – all bands – Year 7 Junior Concert band, Year 8 Intermediate Concert band, Senior Concert Band and both of our Jazz bands – Cold Fusion and Blues’n Jazz will all be performing on this evening.

The concert is for family and friends to come along and see what our students (your children) have achieved in music this year. Look forward to seeing all families on this evening. Students are required to be at school by 6.40pm to set up equipment ready for 7.30pm start.

Budding Scientists Tackle a DNA Experiment.......

Under the guidance of the Barwon Health Laboratory Manager Jason, Stephanie and Coby have been measuring the amount of DNA that they previously extracted from a number of different types of bacteria, which cause infections that are difficult to treat.

They then loaded a small amount of this DNA onto a gel, made from agar derived from seaweed, which allows the DNA to be separated according to length of strand.

The different DNA samples were then viewed under blue light, which causes the DNA to glow.

Thanks Barwon Health for your continued support of our P-TECH Program.

Nathanial Returns From Kokoda

Nathanial Reports On His Experience Hiking the Kokoda

I recently was selected for the Youth Kokoda Program to trek in Papua New Guinea for 10 days.

It was a real challenge, we had some really wet days and sometimes we trekked from 6.30am - 4.30pm.

For some of the kids physically it was really hard; and for me it was tough mentally being away from my family.

It's hard to explain the whole experience. The Kokoda program has pushed me and showed me I can achieve anything, and it has also encouraged me to push others.

The experience has changed the way I think about my life, and I feel lucky to have done it.

Welcome Back

We hope that everyone in the Newcomb Secondary College community was able to have an enjoyable time over the last two weeks.

Yesterday we had a College Assembly to start the term, to quickly reset the students into a school studying and learning mode after their holidays, with a particular emphasis on our Year 12 students as they commence their final term.

We also recognised that, in the coming weeks, much of C Block will be cordoned off as we begin facilities works for our new Food Technology and Canteen facilities.

Mr Honeywell also congratulated Assistant Principal Shane Elevato who has been successful in gaining the Principal position at Lorne P-12 School (see below). He will commence in this new role from 1st November.

Mr Shane Elevato

I am sure that the whole school community will join with me in congratulating him on his appointment as Principal of Lorne P-12 College.

Shane has been a terrific asset to Newcomb Seconday College over the last (almost)4 years, bringing great drive, insight and energy to support the continuing development (and upwards cycle) of our school. His impact has been clear in a range of College initiatives and functions including Student Learning, College Operations, Transition and Student Support to name a few.

We will miss his input but wish him well.

College Council

The September meeting of the Newcomb Secondary College Council took place on the last Thursday of last term. Among the items discussed were the Facilities Developments in C Block that will commence this term and the election promise of further facilities funding.

We also recognised that IBM are coming on board as our newest P-TECH partner

Teens Who Worry

This 90 minute free seminar is perfect for parents and carers of teens who are a little bit too concerned about everyday life.

Offering basic information and strategies to help teens worry less alongside how to develop an action plan for helping them move from feeling anxious – to feeling more empowered and able to act when they are uncomfortable. This is a great program that challenges parents to respond a little differently to their teens– and see if this has a flow on effect on teen’s behaviour. We know all teens are different so you will leave with a customised action plan for your house.

$6 Million Promise

As many in our community will be aware, we were visited by our local State Members of Parliament (Christine Couzens MP and Lisa Neville MP last week),

who announced that (if elected) Newcomb Secondary College would receive $6 Million to complete the renovation of our main facilities footprint.

This would/could include areas of M and C blocks – including Mathematics, Music and Technology amongst other renovation points.

College Council

The September meeting of the Newcomb Secondary College Council will take place this Thursday evening in the Language Centre.

End of Term

This Friday will be the last day of term 3 and students will be finishing at 12.10pm.

This is due to the agreed time in lieu for Parent Teacher Interviews that have taken place earlier this term.

Tidy up for end of term: Students should also take a few minutes over the coming days to clean out their lockers and in particular, ensure the lockers are clean and free of any food remains.

Passport to Employment

Congratulations go to Kayla, Marcus and Mikey!

Passport to Employment

Congratulations to our three year 11 Passport to Employment students, who graduated from the P2E program last Friday in a fancy ceremony at the Gordon Gallery.  We were pleased to see parents, schools, students and program organisers celebrate their achievement.

The P2E program is an initiative run via NDIC at the Gordon, with community support from the LLEN and Ticket to Work network, including many other employers and companies in Geelong.  It is designed to support students as they become ready to join the workforce, enhancing their overall life skills and job readiness.  The high point of the program is a full day of interviews, where approximately 25 prospective employers or employment pathway support providers interview the students.  The interviews can result in tangible future pathways – be it further education, work experience or job prospects.

We are very proud of Kayla, Mikey and Marcus, who gave the program their all, impressed our community members and did Newcomb proud with their successful efforts throughout the program and the many interviews completed.

We’d like to thank all of the organisers and supporters of this sensational program.

Newcomb Secondary Community Column

Last Thursday we acknowledged and celebrated R U OK? Day.

R U OK?'s vision is a world where we are all connected and are protected from suicide and here at Newcomb Secondary we have celebrated this for the last 4 years.

Our mission is to inspire and empower everyone to meaningfully connect with their peers and family  around them and support anyone struggling with life.

Our goals for this day are to:

1. Boost our confidence to meaningfully connect with our peers and colleagues to ask about life's ups and downs

2. Nurture our sense of responsibility to regularly connect and support others

3. Strengthen our sense of belonging because we know people are there for us

4. Be a relevant, strong and dynamic school that prioritizes mental health and self care.

Students dressed with a touch of yellow to acknowledge the day and during school assembly we heard from Tony McManus an R U Ok? Ambassador.

There were yellow cupcakes at lunchtime and a sausage sizzle for all students.

It was  another great day celebrating R U Ok? Day 2018.

LRC News and Events

Reminder: The end of term is a good time to return books that you have finished!

Have you finished a class novel or report?  Return the resources you needed to the library and declutter your room or locker space.

While you are here, borrow something fun to read over the holiday!  All of the novels on display are new to the library this week.

UNO tournament finalists

Congratulations to our two remaining competitors, Kayne and Danielle!

The final match will take place this Wednesday 19/9, second half of lunch.

Back by popular demand:

Friday lunchtime visits to Newcomb Library will resume Term 4

Do something different during lunch! Permission forms to participate in this fortnightly walking excursion are available in the LRC.  Please note that you need to return a new form even if you came along for our Term 2 visits.

Applications for a free Geelong Regional Library card are available for students who do not yet have one.

 Poster Competition

On Wednesday we had the exciting news that one of our students, Monique, is one of only eight winners in a region wide poster competition, run through Women’s Health and Wellbeing (South West Barwon).

Her poster will be made up by a graphic designer and will be part of the poster pack distributed to all participating schools in South West Victoria. Some of our students were lucky enough to this competition last month, which promotes respectful relationships.

Through making the posters we discussed what is respectful and appropriate behaviour online and on social media, and worked out ways that students could be active bystanders and encourage more respectful behaviour from others. There were lots of very insightful ideas that came from our students’ own experiences.

Women’s Health and Wellbeing have really valued the ideas of Newcomb students because young people are the ones on the ground when it comes to these issues.

Congratulations to Monique for her hard work and thoughtful ideas!

Professional Learning Day

Last Thursday our staff worked in teams large and small to continue the development of a range of programs, including: literacy, VCAL, GROW and numeracy.

Mr Phil Honeywell, Principal

Mr Shane Elevato, Assistant Principal

Mrs Liz McNamara, Assistant Principal

The QuickSmart Numeracy Intervention Program……Narrowing the Achievement Gap

The success of student participation in Quicksmart 2017-2018 at Newcomb Secondary College has seen major result improvements in On Demand testing, Maths Pathways growth and PATMaths testing where Quicksmart students have effectively narrowed the achievement gap compared to the control group of student peers.

• Effect Sizes below 0.2 are considered poor, with an appropriate range of growth over an academic year for a student cohort established as within the range of 0.2 to 0.4

• Effect Size scores of 0.4 to 0.6 are considered strong

• Effect Sizes between 0.6 and 0.8 are considered very strong; and

Effect Size scores above 0.8 represent substantial improvement of the order of approximately two-three years’ growth.

(Effect Size is used to show growth or improvement associated with a teaching program)

It’s been an excellent start to the Quicksmart Numeracy intervention program for 2018. We currently have participating in Quicksmart:

Year 7:    17 Students

Year 8:    4 Students

Year 9:    10 Students

I’m pleased to announce that at Week 7, the current group of 2018 students are accelerating at a much faster rate with consistent improvements in accuracy. Students are also narrowing their response times towards becoming automatic in their basic mathematic and problem solving skills.

Junior Band Camp

Junior Music Camp – September 3rd to 5th.

What a fantastic three days we all had at the Junior Music Camp at Angahook Holiday Camp in Aireys Inlet last week.

44 students worked consistently for three days on improving their music performance skills and having lots and lots of fun.

Students involved in this camp who were an absolute pleasure to take away were:

Hannah Allen, Dominic Angus, Tahlia Baroness, Shae Barry, Bailey Bennett, Maddy Bennetts, Bella Binks, Jack Bumpstead, Lucy Cummings, Jesse Davis, Delta Delnef, Victoria Domach, Holly Dove, James Duniam, Kaleesha Durrant, Nathan Evans, Blake Fairfield, Kiara Flakemore, Kasey Fraser, Samantha Gillard, Ellisha Gleeson Walsh, Lana Hamann, Presley Johannesen, Adrian Loaiza, William McFeeters, Alisha Moloney, Flynn O’Hara, Isabella Perry, Jai Pfarrer, Tayla Pitman, Levi Price-Veitch, Jarrod Price, Sarah Rankin, Jasmine Ryan, Grace Thomas, Samual Timms, Aden Vandenbroek, Rayden Veitch, Leevi Villinger Cannon, Raine Warren, Logan Weggelaar, Tiara Hancocks and Jordan Hancocks.

All the music staff and students extend their best wishes to Logan Weggelaar who fell off his bike whilst riding on the bike path in Anglesea on Tuesday and broke his arm. Hope you are back at school as soon as possible.  Looking forward to hearing you play your awesome trombone again in term 4 once the arm is better.

Lots of praise must go to Jarrod Price – Year 8, who came to camp with a broken ankle, that was previously an unfortunate accident when playing basketball.  Jarrod is to be congratulated on his ability to get around the hilly camp site, participate in almost everything and have a smile on his face even though he was somewhat in pain.

Sincere thanks to Mr Goward and his student teacher Josh Holt who came with us for the three days and organised lots of activities.  Thanks to Mr Unmack who came to camp on Tuesday to help with bike riding and Julie Scott for the awesome job she did with catering for so many very active and hungry young people.

NAPLAN 2018 results (secondary schools)

Bendigo Bank has a new star behind the counter.

Check out our first ever P-TECH School Based Apprentice Jack T looking very professional in his uniform and working as a trainee Customer Service Officer at the bank.

Jack was selected by Bendigo Bank as one of only two trainees in Australia to have this opportunity at Bendigo Bank. He handles customer enquiries on the front counter and via their internet, he uses the bank intranet to source information and has been given the opportunity to attend all training available to employees including the FSRA Financial Services Reform Act ..... training which involves learning about the fundamentals of working in a retail Bank environment. Jack is enjoying not only being paid while being on his traineeship, but the immense learning he has been gaining week by week.

Recently Jack visited TJ and Shenoah at their regular P-TECH mentoring session and spoke about his experiences. His message was "if you are interested in a business/finance career - choose P-TECH and give it a go!" This statement was strongly backed up by TJ and Shenoah who also agreed about how much they had gained from their P-TECH experience at Bendigo Bank.

Senior Band Tour

Senior Concert Band Tour

Congratulations to all of the Senior Concert Band Members who went on tour last week performing in Stawell, Ararat and Horsham. The band left school Monday morning and headed to Halls Gap where we stayed for the week at the Baptist Church Camp. For there we travelled out each day to perform. The days were filled with performances of the Senior Concert Band, Cold Fusion and Blues’n Jazz. On Monday afternoon and evening we rehearsed the bands and on the following nights we had activities that were organised by the Year 12 girls, Olive Bultman, Emma Densely, Zoe Bell and Laquisha Addison. There girls did an amazing job of organising all of these activities. We had great fun on Trivia, Games and Auction night, along with our final dress up party night with the theme of ‘Back from the 80’s’. Bowling in Horsham also was another highlight of the week.  Sincere thanks to Mr Goward who drove the bus for us during the week and was always keen to be involved in everything we had going on.  We would also like to thank Julie Scott for all of her fantastic food preparation and not allowing us to go hungry during the week. A big thanks to Tina Terrill who once again this year helped us with the transportation of students and equipment in her mini bus. Tina is always a fun person to have along on these trips and offers great support to the staff in finding the closest coffee shop.

Participating students: (in alphabetical order)

Year 9 & 10 Course Counselling

On Thursday 16th and Friday 17th of August we will be running our Year 9 & 10 Course Counselling sessions in the Language Centre.

Information packs with interview times have been sent home to families to ensure students can begin to research their options and develop an understanding of how their course might look in 2019. If you are unable to make your scheduled time please call the front office to reschedule.

During course counselling, students will select their courses for 2019 including the opportunity to apply for a VET course or SBAT in 2019. There will be no scheduled classes for Year 9 & 10 on both of these days.

This is a busy and exciting time of the year for our students and we look forward to speaking with our Newcomb Secondary families about this in the coming weeks.

PISA Testing

On Monday of Week 6 (20th August) a number of our Year 10 students will participate in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). This process brings together the achievements of over half a million students from 80 different countries.

PISA compares education systems from around the world to explore how we are preparing young people for the challenges of life as an independent adult. Individual student results are not published, and there is no individual identification of the individuals and their schools.

All students who participate in the PISA testing will receive a certificate and a small gift, and there is no need to prepare for or stress about this process.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. More information about PISA can be found at www.acer.org/ozpisa.
