GREAT IDEAS FOR TOMORROW (G.I.F.T. Week) – a thinking and creating program for Year 9. |
The BIG Picture: Your child will be making choices fir subjects at school and employment in the future.
Future employment will involve am employee being innovative. He/she will be expected to think for
themselves, have opinions, make decisions for productive reasons and to create new ideas.
They will be expected to solve problems as they arise. They are part of the Information Age
which they have to sort through, process and come up with solutions which are helpful for business,
self-employment or even lifestyle choices. Students shall make initial selections on
Wednesday 30th April.
The Week:
What ? – a selection of activities during one week to be selected by students
Where is it? - community activities at school, or in our local area or further (Melbourne).
Why? - to think about or create possible changes/ideas for the future.
How?- to fill in a reflection sheet after each day to show your thinking from the day.
When? - three days this semester – Monday, May 12, Thursday May 15, and Friday May.
Dates for semester 2 to be announced, closer to the date in Term 4.
The Activities:
Monday 12th April all students attend a free community sports day. Casual gear, runners,
lunch needed, snacks provided.
Choices for Thursday 15th and Friday 16th April are:
“Exposing the City” – Thursday May 15 – in Melbourne, travelling by train interesting places in Melbourne – the War Memorial, the “Gallery of Champions” Museum, “Top Arts” VCE student work display at Federation Square.
Friday May 16 – Reflection & Summit for the Future (at school) . COST: $5
“My Future Career”. Thursday May 15 – in Geelong, travelling by bus. Will you work at Alcoa?
Will you study at Deakin University? Will you be part of the automotive industry? Visit Alcoa, Deakin Uni and the Ford Discovery Centre to explore some options for your future.
Friday May 16 – at school taking part in an NSC summit for the future. COST: $5
Be a reporter/filmmaker for the day. Practise journalism and photography skills. Use technology and computers to create a DVD,
add to the newsletter and the magazine. Thursday May 15 AND Friday May 15 COST: Free
“Rockskool” (being in a band, creating music)
Thursday May 15 AND Friday May 16
* Not a Semester 1 choice if doing GROW on Fridays. COST: Free
House activities -making banners, making t-shirts with house logo, house noticeboards
Thursday May 15 AND Friday May 16 COST: Free
First Aid Certificate/ Save A Mate. Complete a 2-day First Aid Certificate and “Save-a-Mate” program (Red Cross drug and alcohol peer education).
Perfect addition to your resume. Perfect for babysitting, coaching and umpiring part-time jobs. Full price in the community is $95, but for you,
thanks to the ADVANCE Program, this is reduced to $30!

Musical Production Crew – helping with backstage, costumes, makeup, lighting and sound
Thursday May 15 AND Friday May 16 COST: Free
Landscaping – planting, creating and maintaining gardens, trees

Note: Those students doing the subject GROW cannot select Rockskool or the First Aid Certificate in Semester 1 (2 day activity)
What you can do: Keep relevant info for these days, be aware of the cost of some activities, sign permission forms, return permission forms straight away, discuss this with your son/daughter.
Students make initial selections on Wednesday, 30th April. Final selection for choices will be based upon those students who return forms first. Permission forms will be distributed by Friday 2nd May.
